The Hazel Sanderson, EdD., R.N. Health Career Scholarship provides support for a deserving student who has completed at least one BQLI-AHEC program in the past 5 years and is pursuing a career in a healthcare profession. The recipient of this award will be selected based on their spirit, tenacity, and dedication to providing care to underserved communities in our region.
Dr. Hazel Sanderson-Marcoux, originally from Trinidad, immigrated to the United States in 1975 to pursue her dream of becoming an educator and nurse. She obtained her B.S. in Nursing from Long Island University in 1981, followed by a master’s degree in Nursing Education from Columbia University Teachers College in 1986. Dr. Sanderson-Marcoux then began her academic career at LIU, teaching pediatric nursing. She later earned a Doctor of Education in Academic Teaching from Teachers College.
Over 30 years at LIU, she held various administrative roles and played a key part in the school’s accreditation process, earning 10 years of accreditation without deficiencies. Dr. Sanderson-Marcoux received recognition as an American Academy for Colleges of Nursing Leadership Fellow in 2002 and secured a $1 million grant focused on diversity in nursing after four years of effort.
Her teaching philosophy emphasizes bridging knowledge and application through simulation learning activities. She continues to work as a home care critical care nurse for infants with special needs while also mentoring faculty and pursuing her passion for writing children’s books. The Hazel Sanderson, EdD., R.N. Health Career Scholarship honors her contributions to the field.
